LONDON (SHARECAST) - (ShareCast News) - London's FTSE 100 up 0.3% to 7,449.05 in afternoon trade on Friday, underpinned by strong UK manufacturing data even as the US non-farm payrolls report disappointed.
G4S was recovering from losses on Thursday on the back of a broker downgrade, as it emerged that the security services company has suspended nine members of staff from an immigration removal centre following claims of abuse and assaults against detainees.
G4S, which manages Brook House Immigration Removal Centre in Gatwick, said an investigation was launched as soon as the allegations were made by BBC Panorama.
Going the other way, troubled subprime lender Provident Financial was under the cosh a day after rival Morses Club hailed an encouraging start to the year, reporting a rise in its customer numbers and loan book in the 26 week period to 26 August.
The company said trading for the period has continued to be "strong", with total credit issued up 25% to £82.2m compared to the same period last year, reflecting "a significant increase in territory builds".
The update came a week after Provident issued its second profit warning in two months, withdrew its dividend, announced the departure of its CEO and revealed an FCA investigation into Vanquis Bank, as it transitioned to a fully-employed agent model.
Royal Mail was a little weaker after being demoted to the FTSE 250 in the latest quarterly reshuffle.
