LONDON (SHARECAST) - (Sharecast News) - London's FTSE 250 was up 0.1% at 21,665.16 in afternoon trade on Thursday.
Galliford Try was a high riser after an upbeat trading update, while gold miner Centamin rose after it posted a jump in fourth-quarter production and backed its guidance for 2020.
In the three months to the end of December, gold production at the Sukari mine rose 51% from the third quarter to 148,387 ounces. For 2019 as a whole, gold production was up 2% on the previous year at 480,529 ounces.
Pug group Mitchells & Butlers fizzed higher after it said like for like sales grew 2.6% in the 14 weeks to January 4 with a strong performance over the Christmas period.
Going the other way, building materials group SIG tumbled as it issued a profit warning due to deteriorating construction markets, namely in the UK. Builders' merchant Travis Perkins followed suit.
Marks & Spencer suffered heavy losses after the retailer reported a 0.6% decline in total third-quarter sales to £2.8bn as its clothing and home segment underperformed. In addition, while the company backed its guidance for the year, it said gross margins were expected to be around the lower end of guidance.
Computacenter was knocked lower by a downgrade at UBS while Tullow Oil was dented by a downgrade at Barclays.
